Lake Bled is one of Europe’s most photographed destinations, a glowing alpine lake with a tiny church on an island, overlooked by a medieval castle and surrounded by mountains. But what many visitors don’t realize is how easy (and how scenic) it is to reach Lake Bled from Ljubljana by train.

At least… in theory.

We decided to take the train to Bled Jezero, the most scenic station for visiting Lake Bled. But our adventure quickly turned into a mix of confusion, old trains, language barriers, and winter cold, the kind of travel story that becomes fun after you’ve done it.

This guide gives you everything you need to know about traveling from Ljubljana to Lake Bled by train, plus a real look at what the journey is actually like.

Where Is Lake Bled?

Lake Bled sits in the northwestern part of Slovenia, close to the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park region. It’s only 55 km from Ljubljana, making it perfect for a day trip.

Even though Lake Bled feels like a remote fairy-tale world, it’s surprisingly accessible, especially by train.

Ljubljana → Lake Bled by Train: What You Need to Know

Two Stations — One Scenic, One Practical

Lake Bled can be reached by two train stations, and they couldn’t be more different:

Bled Jezero

  • Closest to the lake (10 minutes’ walk)
  • On the scenic Bohinj railway line
  • Older trains, slower, peaceful views
  • This is the station we went to

Lesce-Bled

  • Faster connection
  • 4 km from the lake (requires bus/taxi)
  • More modern, reliable connections

Most tourists choose Lesce-Bled because it’s simpler.

We chose Bled Jezero, and that choice made the day an adventure.

The Reality of Slovenian Train Travel (And Why It’s Confusing)

Slovenian Railways (SZ) is charming… and slightly chaotic.

Trains run. But not always exactly when the website or station displays say they do. Some lines are old, some stations tiny, and many locals rely on conductor announcements rather than displays.

Especially for the Bohinj line toward Bled Jezero. Everyone is friendly, but not always able to explain which train goes where.

At Ljubljana station, our train looked like something from the 1960s.

We weren’t even sure if it was in service.

The trains do arrive. People get onboard. And eventually, the conductor confirms you’re heading the right direction.

Our Journey: Finding the Right Train to Bled Jezero

We arrived at Ljubljana Railway Station full of confidence, we had the timetables, the route, everything.

Except: the platform signs didn’t match the app, the train that appeared wasn’t labeled

No one seemed 100% sure if it was going to Bled. The old train looked like something that should be in a museum.

We just hopped on the old train and saw a sign that mentioned Jezero somehow so we assumed it was right.

We boarded and that was it.

We eventually made it to Bled. 🙂

Walking Around Lake Bled (And Taking Photos)

We walked part of the lake loop.

In winter, it felt almost empty, which made the views even more surreal. The island church appearing through fog is surely the top highlight of the lake.

Even though it was cold, we stopped constantly to take photos.

Winter light at Bled is soft — the kind photographers love.

But I’d love to see Bled in spring or summer.

How to Get Back to Ljubljana

Trains from Bled Jezero back to Ljubljana run several times per day, but again — timetables can change.

We waited at the station with a few locals, watching our breath in the cold air. The train eventually arrived, right on time or completely off schedule, difficult to tell in Slovenia.

But it came.

And it took us to Ljubljana again.

Should You Take the Train to Lake Bled?

Absolutely. Yes.

Especially if you enjoy:

  • Scenic slow travel
  • Authentic experiences
  • Quiet routes
  • Old-fashioned trains
  • Less touristy stations

Bled Jezero is the perfect choice if you want the journey to be part of the adventure, not just the destination.

If you want speed, take the bus. If you want beauty, take the train.
