Traveling from Zurich to Bern by train is one of the easiest and most comfortable journeys you can make in Switzerland.

Whether you’re visiting Bern for a day trip, transferring deeper into the Bernese Oberland, or exploring the Swiss capital as part of a bigger itinerary, the train is by far the best way to get there.

I’ve taken this route multiple times.

Usually in summer and the experience is consistently excellent. Both IC and IR trains offer smooth rides, fast travel times, and great views of the Swiss countryside. With Interrail, you can even sit in 1st class without needing reservations.

This guide covers everything you need to know.

Overview of the Zurich–Bern Train Route

The train from Zurich to Bern is one of Switzerland’s most popular connections.

It links the country’s largest city with the capital, crossing through rolling hills, lakes, and small villages.

  • No border checks
  • No reservations needed
  • Runs all day, from early morning to late evening
  • Direct trains (no transfers required)

It’s a perfect day trip and also a key route if you’re continuing to places like Interlaken, Grindelwald, Zermatt, or the Bernese Oberland.

Travel Time

The journey from Zurich HB to Bern takes around 56–70 minutes

Depending on the train type (IC or IR), you’ll arrive in roughly the same amount of time. Switzerland’s rail system is fast and extremely reliable, so delays are rare.

Train Frequency

Trains run every 30 minutes, sometimes even more frequently in peak hours.

Typical pattern:

  • Zurich HB → Bern: twice per hour
  • Direct trains
  • Early morning until around midnight

You never have to plan too tightly, just show up at the station and hop on the next departure. We always do. (unless we have a tight schedule)

Do You Need Seat Reservations?

No — reservations are not required.

Even in summer, you can:

  • Walk onto any IC or IR train
  • Sit anywhere in your class
  • Travel freely with Interrail, Swiss Travel Pass, or regular tickets

My experience is that most Swiss don’t use reservations in this kind of trains.

1st class is usually quieter and has more space, but 2nd class is perfectly comfortable too.

First Class vs Second Class

I often travel in 1st class when using Interrail, and it’s absolutely worth it on this route—especially during summer.

First Class

  • More legroom
  • Quieter carriages
  • Big windows (great for photography)
  • More space for luggage

Second Class

  • Affordable
  • Modern and clean
  • Nearly identical speed and comfort
  • Perfectly fine for short trips like Zurich–Bern

No matter your class, Swiss trains feel premium.

IC vs IR Trains: What’s the Difference?

Both options are excellent.

IC (InterCity)

  • Most comfortable
  • Modern rolling stock
  • Slightly faster
  • Larger windows and smoother ride

IR (InterRegio)

  • Practically just as good
  • Same level of comfort
  • May stop at an extra station or two
  • Only a few minutes slower

Most travelers won’t notice much difference. I’ve taken both multiple times and found them equally enjoyable.

Scenic Highlights Along the Route

While not Alpine-level scenic like the Bernina or GoldenPass Line, the Zurich–Bern route still offers beautiful views:

  • Rolling Swiss countryside
  • Lakes near Zurich
  • Farmlands and bright green hills
  • Occasional mountain silhouettes on clear days

Sit on the right side when leaving Zurich for the best landscape views.

Best Time of Day to Travel

  • Morning: soft light, quiet trains
  • Afternoon:** warmer colors, busier carriages
  • Evening:** golden-hour landscapes (great for photography)

Summer offers the most beautiful scenery, but winter has a peaceful, cinematic feel as well.

Why Take the Train Instead of a Car?

The train is simply better. Here’s why:

  • Faster than driving
  • No parking stress in Bern
  • Cheaper than renting a car
  • Greener & more sustainable
  • Beautiful views along the way
  • Runs every 30 minutes
  • Train stations are right in the city centers

Driving takes longer, usually involves traffic, and offers less comfort.
