Taking the train from Zurich to Interlaken is one of the easiest ways to go from city vibes to full-on Swiss mountain scenery. It’s a classic route for first-time visitors, hikers, photographers, and anyone heading toward places like Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, or the Jungfrau region.

I’ve done plenty of Swiss train routes (usually in summer), and this one is exactly what Switzerland does best: comfortable trains, frequent departures, and a smooth connection into the Alps without needing seat reservations.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Zurich to Interlaken train, including travel time, frequency, where to transfer (if needed), best seats for views, and practical tips.

Overview of the Zurich–Interlaken Train Route

Most journeys from Zurich HB to Interlaken are either:

  • 1 easy transfer (most common), usually in Bern or Lucerne
  • Or a connection that still feels “direct” because Swiss transfers are short, organized, and reliable

Interlaken has two main stations:

  • Interlaken West (great for hotels and boats)
  • Interlaken Ost (best for connections to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch)

In most cases, you’ll want Interlaken Ost.

Travelling this route with a suitcase is straightforward. I explain luggage space, transfers and station lockers in my guide to travelling Switzerland by train with luggage

Travel Time: How Long Is the Train from Zurich to Interlaken?

Typical travel time is: around 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes

It depends on the connection and transfer point, but it’s consistently fast and smooth.

Train Frequency

Trains run very frequently from Zurich to Interlaken.

Typical pattern:

  • Multiple connections per hour
  • Early morning until late evening
  • Easy to travel spontaneously without planning far ahead

In Switzerland, this route is built for convenience.

Do You Need Seat Reservations?

No — seat reservations are not required.

Even during summer:

  • You can board and sit anywhere in your class
  • Most locals don’t reserve seats for domestic routes
  • Interrail and Swiss Travel Pass work seamlessly (depending on your pass coverage)

If you want a quieter ride, 1st class is usually calmer — but 2nd class is perfectly comfortable too.

Best Route Options (Bern vs Lucerne)

There are two common “best” ways to get to Interlaken.

Option 1: Transfer in Bern (fast and simple)

This is often the most efficient route.

  • Smooth connection
  • Perfect if you plan to combine Bern + Interlaken in one trip

Option 2: Transfer in Lucerne (more scenic vibe)

This option can feel a bit more “holiday-like”:

  • Beautiful landscapes in Central Switzerland
  • Great if you want to combine Lucerne with your trip

Both options are excellent. Switzerland doesn’t really have “bad” train routes.

Interlaken West vs Interlaken Ost: Which Station Should You Choose?

This matters more than most people realize.

Interlaken West

Best for:

  • Hotels and restaurants in Interlaken
  • Lake Thun boat trips
  • A relaxed arrival

Best for:

  • Connections to Grindelwald
  • Connections to Lauterbrunnen
  • Jungfrau region travel
  • Hiking and mountain transport

If you’re heading deeper into the Alps, choose Interlaken Ost.
