In this guide
The Mürren to Lauterbrunnen hike is one of the most rewarding walks in the Jungfrau region. It combines dramatic valley views, peaceful alpine paths, and a long descent into one of Switzerland’s most iconic landscapes.
I did this hike in August 2024, in full summer conditions. It was hot, around 28–30°C, but absolutely worth it. The route felt varied and never boring, with plenty of moments to stop, rest, and take in the scenery.
This guide is based on that experience and explains exactly how to get to the start, what the route looks like, how difficult it is, and whether it’s worth adding to your itinerary.
Quick overview of the hike
This hike is best described as a scenic downhill route from the mountains into the valley.
Key facts at a glance:
- Distance: about 8.9 km
- Elevation change: mostly downhill, around 400 m descent
- Time needed: 3 to 4 hours, depending on pace and stops
- Difficulty: moderate
- Best for: hikers with average fitness who enjoy long descents and views
How to get to the start of the hike
Even though the hike ends in Lauterbrunnen, the easiest way to do this route is to start higher up and walk down.
We started in Lauterbrunnen after traveling from Interlaken Ost, then used public transport to reach Mürren before beginning the hike.
The route to the start looks like this:
- Train to Lauterbrunnen
- Cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp
- Mountain train from Grütschalp to Mürren
This transport combo is smooth and well organized. Once you arrive in Mürren, you are already surrounded by mountain scenery, which makes it a perfect starting point.

The hike route: Mürren to Lauterbrunnen
The hike begins in Mürren and follows paths that gradually lead you away from the village and along the mountain slopes. Early on, you walk with open views across the valley, which immediately sets the tone for the rest of the route.
One of the highlights is the section along the Mittelberg area, where the path feels calm and spacious. From here, the trail continues toward Bergrestaurant Winteregg, a well known spot and a natural place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
From Winteregg, the hike turns more clearly downhill. The descent is steady but manageable, and the path remains well maintained. Even though it is not technically difficult, the length and downhill nature mean it can feel demanding, especially in warm weather.
We stopped halfway at a picnic bench, had lunch, and simply enjoyed the view.
That break made a big difference, especially given the heat.

As you continue down, the valley grows closer, and the sound of waterfalls becomes more noticeable. Eventually, the trail brings you back into Lauterbrunnen, where the landscape suddenly feels vertical and dramatic.
How difficult is the Mürren to Lauterbrunnen hike?
This hike is technically moderate, not extreme. You do not need climbing skills or special equipment. However, it is not an easy stroll either.
Things to keep in mind:
- The route is mostly downhill, which can be tiring on knees
- In summer, heat adds to the difficulty
- Good footwear is recommended due to the length
If you are comfortable walking for several hours and used to uneven paths, this hike is very doable.
Best time of year and conditions
Summer is a popular time for this hike, but warm temperatures can make it more demanding. We did it in August, and the heat was noticeable, especially during exposed sections.
Spring and early autumn can be more comfortable, with cooler temperatures and fewer people. No matter the season, start earlier in the day if you can, especially on hot days.
What makes this hike special
What stood out most for me was the constant sense of scale. You are always aware of the depth of the valley and the height you are descending from.
The mix of:
- open valley views
- quiet alpine paths
- and a dramatic finish in Lauterbrunnen
makes this hike feel complete rather than repetitive.
It also pairs perfectly with public transport, which is rare for hikes of this quality.
Finishing the hike and getting back
The hike ends in Lauterbrunnen, right in the valley. From there, returning is easy.
We took the train from Lauterbrunnen back to Interlaken, which runs frequently and makes this hike very practical as a half or full-day activity.
No car is needed at any point.
Is this hike worth it?
Yes, especially if you want a hike that feels scenic without being technical. The Mürren to Lauterbrunnen hike delivers classic Swiss views, a satisfying descent, and excellent public transport connections.
It’s a strong choice if you’re staying in Interlaken, Mürren, or anywhere in the Jungfrau region.
