In this guide
Oeschinensee and Bachalpsee are two of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Switzerland, but they offer very different experiences.
Bachalpsee is the more straightforward choice if you are staying around Interlaken, Grindelwald or the Jungfrau Region. You take the cable car to Grindelwald First, hike to the lake, and get those classic wide-open views of the Bernese Alps.
Oeschinensee feels more dramatic. The lake is bigger, the cliffs around it are steeper, and the whole place has a slightly more powerful alpine atmosphere. It also feels more like a full day trip, especially if you are coming from Interlaken, Thun, Bern or Spiez by train.
I have hiked to Bachalpsee in both summer and spring conditions, and I have also done the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail. They are both worth visiting, but not for the same reason.
This guide compares Oeschinensee and Bachalpsee for views, hiking difficulty, transport, crowds, photography and day trip planning, so you can decide which lake fits your Switzerland trip better.
Quick Answer: Oeschinensee or Bachalpsee?
Choose Bachalpsee if you are staying in Interlaken or Grindelwald and want a relatively straightforward mountain lake hike with classic Jungfrau views.
Choose Oeschinensee if you want a more dramatic alpine lake, steeper mountain scenery and a fuller day trip beyond the Jungfrau Region.
In simple terms:
- Easier from Interlaken: Bachalpsee
- More dramatic lake setting: Oeschinensee
- Better for a classic Grindelwald hike: Bachalpsee
- Better for a bigger mountain-lake day: Oeschinensee
- Better if you want panoramic lake views from above: Oeschinensee Panorama Trail
- Better if you want a more predictable first-time hike: Bachalpsee in summer
Oeschinensee vs Bachalpsee: Quick Comparison
| Category | Oeschinensee | Bachalpsee |
|---|---|---|
| Region | Kandersteg / Bernese Oberland | Grindelwald / Jungfrau Region |
| Best base | Kandersteg, Spiez, Thun, Bern, Interlaken | Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen |
| Main access | Train to Kandersteg + cable car + walk | Train to Grindelwald + First cable car + hike |
| Hike difficulty | Easy lake walk or moderate Panorama Trail | Usually moderate but straightforward in summer |
| Scenery | Dramatic lake, cliffs and steep mountain walls | Open alpine views and classic Bernese Alps scenery |
| Best for photography | Big lake views, cliffs, panorama angles | Reflections, mountain backdrop, wide landscapes |
| Better for first-timers | Depends on route | Bachalpsee is usually simpler |
| Better as a full day trip | Oeschinensee | Bachalpsee can be a shorter day |
| Best if staying in Grindelwald | Less logical | Very logical |
| Best if staying in Kandersteg | Very logical | Less logical |
Which Lake Is Easier to Reach?
Bachalpsee is usually easier to reach if you are staying in Interlaken, Grindelwald or elsewhere in the Jungfrau Region.
The route is simple: travel to Grindelwald, take the cable car to First, and hike to Bachalpsee. It still requires effort, but the logistics are easy to understand.
Oeschinensee is also very reachable without a car, but the journey has more steps. You first travel to Kandersteg, then continue to the Oeschinensee cable car, take the cable car up, and walk toward the lake. If you are coming from Interlaken, Thun or Bern, you will usually travel via Spiez.
So if the question is purely about convenience from Interlaken, Bachalpsee wins.
But if you are staying in Thun, Spiez, Bern or Kandersteg, Oeschinensee becomes much more logical.
Which Hike Is Harder?
This depends on which route you choose at Oeschinensee.
The easy walk from the Oeschinensee cable car toward the lake is not the same as the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail. The basic lake visit is relatively accessible. The panorama trail is a proper mountain hike, with more elevation, more exposure and more effort.

Bachalpsee is usually more straightforward in summer. The hike from Grindelwald First to Bachalpsee climbs and descends, but it is easy to follow and does not feel as exposed as the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail.
My honest comparison:
- Bachalpsee in summer: easier and more predictable
- Bachalpsee in spring snow: can be more difficult than expected
- Oeschinensee easy lake walk: easiest Oeschinensee option
- Oeschinensee Panorama Trail: harder and more rewarding
If you want the safest choice for a first mountain-lake hike, I would choose Bachalpsee in good summer conditions.

If you want the more impressive hiking experience, I would choose the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail.
Which Lake Has Better Views?
Both lakes are beautiful, but the views feel very different.
Bachalpsee gives you that classic open Bernese Alps feeling. The landscape is wide, bright and spacious, with mountain peaks in the background and the lake sitting quietly in the middle of it. On a calm day, you may get reflections in the water, which makes the place feel almost too perfect.
Oeschinensee feels more dramatic. The lake is larger, the surrounding cliffs are steeper, and the mountains feel closer. It does not have the same open, gentle feeling as Bachalpsee. It feels more enclosed, heavier, and more powerful.

If I had to describe the difference simply:
| View type | Better lake |
|---|---|
| Classic Swiss postcard views | Bachalpsee |
| Dramatic alpine lake scenery | Oeschinensee |
| Wide open mountain landscapes | Bachalpsee |
| Steep cliffs and big lake atmosphere | Oeschinensee |
| Reflections and soft scenery | Bachalpsee |
| Powerful mountain setting | Oeschinensee |
Personally, I think Bachalpsee is prettier in a gentle way, while Oeschinensee is more impressive.
Bachalpsee is the kind of place where you stop and think: this is exactly what I imagined Switzerland would look like.
Oeschinensee is the kind of place where you feel a bit smaller.
Which One Is Better for Photography?
For photography, I would give a slight edge to Oeschinensee, especially if you do the Panorama Trail.
From the lake itself, Oeschinensee is already impressive. But the higher trail gives you better angles. You can photograph the lake from above, with the cliffs around it and the deep blue water below. That makes the landscape feel more layered and more dramatic.
Bachalpsee is also very photogenic, but in a different way. It works best when the weather is calm and the light is soft. The lake, reflections and mountain backdrop can look beautiful, especially early in the morning or later in the day.
The challenge with Bachalpsee is that many photos end up looking similar: lake in the foreground, mountains in the background. Beautiful, but familiar.
Oeschinensee gives you more variation if you hike higher.
In simple terms:
- Best for reflections: Bachalpsee
- Best for dramatic lake photos: Oeschinensee
- Best for wide mountain landscapes: Bachalpsee
- Best for high-angle panorama shots: Oeschinensee
- Best if you want easier photos with less hiking effort: Bachalpsee
- Best if you are willing to work harder for the view: Oeschinensee
If photography is one of your main reasons for visiting, I would choose based on how much effort you want to put in. For an easier photography walk, Bachalpsee is excellent. For stronger, more dramatic compositions, I would choose Oeschinensee and hike the Panorama Trail.
Which One Is Better as a Day Trip from Interlaken?
From Interlaken, Bachalpsee is usually the easier day trip.
You travel to Grindelwald, take the cable car to First, and hike to the lake. The route is direct, easy to understand, and fits naturally into a Jungfrau Region itinerary.
Oeschinensee is also possible from Interlaken, but it is a fuller day. You usually travel from Interlaken to Spiez, then continue to Kandersteg, then reach the cable car, go up, and walk toward the lake.
That does not make Oeschinensee difficult. It just means it takes more planning.
If you only have a few days in the Jungfrau Region, Bachalpsee is the more logical choice. It combines well with Grindelwald, First, and other activities in the area.
If you have more time, or if you want to see another part of the Bernese Oberland beyond the classic Jungfrau routes, Oeschinensee is worth the extra effort.
My recommendation:
| Situation | Better choice |
| First time in Interlaken | Bachalpsee |
| Staying in Grindelwald | Bachalpsee |
| Staying in Thun, Spiez or Bern | Oeschinensee |
| Want the easiest mountain lake day | Bachalpsee |
| Want a bigger, more dramatic day trip | Oeschinensee |
| Already visited Jungfrau/Grindelwald | Oeschinensee |
Which One Is Less Crowded?
Neither Oeschinensee nor Bachalpsee is a hidden gem.
They are both famous, beautiful and popular for a reason. If you visit in peak summer, during good weather, and in the middle of the day, you should expect other people.
That said, the crowds feel different.
At Bachalpsee, most people follow the same route from Grindelwald First to the lake and back. This can make the trail feel busy, especially around the lake itself.
At Oeschinensee, the easy lake area can also be busy, but the Panorama Trail spreads people out more. If you hike higher, you can often create a bit more space for yourself.
So I would not say one is always quiet and the other is always crowded. It depends on the route, timing and season.
But generally:
- Bachalpsee feels busier on the main trail
- Oeschinensee feels busy near the lake but more spacious on the Panorama Trail
- Early morning is better for both
- Weekdays are better than weekends
- Shoulder season can be quieter, but conditions are less predictable
If avoiding crowds matters, start early. That is the most reliable advice for both lakes.
Which One Is Better for Beginner Hikers?
For beginner hikers, I would usually recommend Bachalpsee in summer.
The route from Grindelwald First to Bachalpsee is easy to follow, popular, and not too technical in normal summer conditions. It still involves hiking, but it feels more predictable than the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail.
Oeschinensee depends more on the route you choose. If you take the cable car and walk directly to the lake, it can be very manageable. But if you choose the Panorama Trail, it becomes a more serious hike.
So the fair answer is:
| Type of beginner | Better option |
| Wants a simple mountain lake hike | Bachalpsee |
| Wants the easiest possible lake visit | Oeschinensee easy lake walk |
| Wants a bigger challenge | Oeschinensee Panorama Trail |
| Nervous about exposure/heights | Bachalpsee |
| Fit and confident beginner | Either, but choose the right route |
One important note: Bachalpsee can become much harder if there is still snow on the trail. I experienced Bachalpsee in spring conditions, and it felt very different from summer. In summer, it is straightforward. With snow, it becomes much less casual.
So do not only look at the lake. Look at the season.
Which One Would I Choose?
If I had to choose only one, I would probably choose Oeschinensee.
Not because Bachalpsee disappointed me. It did not. Bachalpsee is beautiful, and if you are already in Grindelwald, it is one of the most logical hikes you can do.
But Oeschinensee stayed with me in a different way.
It feels bigger. More dramatic. A little less soft. The mountains around the lake make the whole place feel heavier and more cinematic, especially if you see it from above on the Panorama Trail.
That said, I would not recommend Oeschinensee to everyone over Bachalpsee.
If this is your first trip to the Jungfrau Region, and you are staying in Interlaken or Grindelwald, Bachalpsee is probably the more practical choice.
If you have already seen some of the classic Jungfrau places, or if you want a mountain lake that feels more intense and less predictable, Oeschinensee is the one I would pick.
My simple recommendation:
- Choose Bachalpsee for ease, classic views and a straightforward Grindelwald hike.
- Choose Oeschinensee for drama, scale and a more memorable mountain-lake day.
