Grindelwald is one of the most dramatic mountain villages in Switzerland. It sits directly below the Eiger, surrounded by steep green slopes, cable cars, hiking trails, wooden chalets and the kind of mountain scenery that feels almost unreal the first time you arrive.

I first visited Grindelwald in June 2022 and have returned several times since. What I like about Grindelwald is not that it feels hidden or undiscovered, because it does not. It can be busy, polished and very tourist-friendly. But the setting is genuinely impressive. The mountains feel close, the train ride from Interlaken is easy, and places like Grindelwald First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger Trail make it one of the best bases for a first mountain day in the Jungfrau Region.

This Grindelwald travel guide is written for people visiting without a car, especially if you are staying in Interlaken and want to understand whether Grindelwald is worth visiting, how to get there, what to do, and how to make the most of your time.

Quick answer: is Grindelwald worth visiting?

Yes, Grindelwald is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you want big mountain views, easy train access from Interlaken, and famous experiences like Grindelwald First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger Trail.

If Lauterbrunnen feels more magical and atmospheric, Grindelwald feels more open, dramatic and activity-focused. It is one of the easiest places in the Jungfrau Region to visit without a car, because trains from Interlaken Ost are frequent and the village connects directly to cable cars, hiking trails and mountain viewpoints.

For a first visit, Grindelwald works best as a full-day trip from Interlaken. You can arrive by train in the morning, go up to Grindelwald First, hike to Bachalpsee, explore the village, and return to Interlaken in the evening.

Where is Grindelwald?

Grindelwald is a mountain village in the Bernese Oberland, in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland. It sits above Interlaken and below the Eiger, one of the most famous mountains in the Alps.

For most visitors, Grindelwald is reached by train from Interlaken Ost. The journey is simple and scenic, and it makes Grindelwald one of the easiest mountain villages to visit if you are travelling around Switzerland by public transport.

Grindelwald is also well connected to other popular places in the region, including:

  • Interlaken
  • Lauterbrunnen
  • Wengen
  • Kleine Scheidegg
  • Jungfraujoch
  • Grindelwald First
  • Bachalpsee
  • Eiger Trail

If you are planning your trip around public transport, Grindelwald is one of the most convenient places in the area.

How to get to Grindelwald from Interlaken

The easiest way to get to Grindelwald is by train from Interlaken Ost.

You should use Interlaken Ost, not Interlaken West, because Interlaken Ost is the main station for trains heading into the Jungfrau Region. From there, you can take the train towards Grindelwald.

The journey usually takes around 35 minutes, but always check the current timetable before travelling because schedules can change by season, maintenance work, or connection pattern.

If you want the full route breakdown, I have a separate guide here:

👉 Read: Interlaken to Grindelwald Train

In general, the route is straightforward:

  1. Start at Interlaken Ost.
  2. Take the train towards Grindelwald.
  3. Arrive at Grindelwald station.
  4. Walk into the village or continue to Grindelwald Terminal or Grindelwald First, depending on your plan.

You do not need a car for Grindelwald. In fact, I think the train is usually the easiest and least stressful way to visit.

Interlaken Ost or Interlaken West: which station do you need?

For Grindelwald, you should use Interlaken Ost.

Interlaken West is useful if your hotel is nearby or if you are arriving from certain mainline routes, but trains into the Jungfrau Region generally depart from Interlaken Ost. That includes routes towards Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and other mountain destinations.

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when planning a trip to Grindelwald from Interlaken. If you are staying in Interlaken, check which station is closest to your hotel, but plan your mountain train journeys from Interlaken Ost.

What to do in Grindelwald

Grindelwald is not just a pretty village. It is more of an activity base. Most people come here for cable cars, hiking, viewpoints and mountain scenery rather than for a quiet old town experience.

These are the best things to do in Grindelwald.

1. Visit Grindelwald First

Grindelwald First is one of the most popular mountain excursions from Grindelwald. The cable car starts from the village and takes you up to a high viewpoint with hiking trails, mountain views and adventure activities.

This is where many visitors go for:

  • First Cliff Walk
  • Bachalpsee hike
  • mountain views over Grindelwald
  • adventure activities such as zipline-style attractions
  • easy access to high alpine scenery

For a first visit to Grindelwald, this is probably the most obvious choice. It gives you that classic “big mountain day” without needing a complicated itinerary.

If you only have one day in Grindelwald and the weather is good, I would put Grindelwald First near the top of your list.

2. Hike to Bachalpsee

Bachalpsee is one of the most famous lake hikes near Grindelwald. The classic route starts from Grindelwald First and follows a mountain path to the lake.

The hike is popular for a reason. It is relatively accessible compared with many alpine hikes, but the views are still beautiful. On a clear day, you get open mountain scenery, wide skies and reflections around the lake.

This is not a hidden trail. In summer, it can be busy. But it is still one of the best hikes to do if you want a manageable route with a strong visual reward.

3. Walk around Grindelwald village

Grindelwald village itself is worth some time, especially if this is your first visit. The centre is easy to walk around, with hotels, shops, restaurants, mountain views and direct access to transport.

Do not expect a silent alpine village. Grindelwald is popular, commercial and very visitor-friendly. But the scenery around the village is genuinely impressive. Even a simple walk through town can feel special because the Eiger and surrounding peaks are always present in the background.

If you are visiting from Interlaken, I would not rush straight from the train to the cable car. Give yourself at least a little time to walk around, look back at the mountains and get a feel for the place.

4. Do the Eiger Trail

The Eiger Trail is one of the most iconic hikes near Grindelwald. It brings you close to the famous north face of the Eiger and gives a very different feeling from the Bachalpsee hike.

Where Bachalpsee feels open and scenic, the Eiger Trail feels more rugged and dramatic. The mountain presence is stronger. You are not just looking at pretty scenery; you feel like you are walking below one of the most famous alpine walls in Europe.

This is a better option if you want a more serious hiking experience and are comfortable with mountain terrain. Always check trail conditions before you go, especially early or late in the season.

5. Use Grindelwald as a base for Jungfraujoch

Grindelwald is also one of the main access points for Jungfraujoch, often marketed as the “Top of Europe”.

Many visitors travel via Grindelwald Terminal and continue by cable car/train connections towards the Jungfraujoch route. This is a much bigger and more expensive excursion than simply visiting Grindelwald First or hiking to Bachalpsee, so I would plan it separately rather than casually adding it to a Grindelwald day.

If your main goal is Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald can be a logical place to pass through. If your main goal is a relaxed day trip from Interlaken, Grindelwald First and Bachalpsee may be enough.

Grindelwald First vs Bachalpsee: what is the difference?

Grindelwald First is the mountain area and cable car destination. Bachalpsee is the lake hike you can do from there.

So you do not really choose between them in the same way you would choose between two separate villages. Many people visit both on the same trip:

  1. Take the cable car from Grindelwald to First.
  2. Enjoy the viewpoint and First Cliff Walk.
  3. Hike from First to Bachalpsee.
  4. Return to First and descend back to Grindelwald.

If the weather is clear and you have enough time, this is probably the classic Grindelwald day.

Grindelwald vs Lauterbrunnen

Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are two of the most popular places in the Jungfrau Region, but they feel different.

Lauterbrunnen is more atmospheric. It sits in a narrow valley with cliffs, waterfalls and a slightly magical feeling, especially early in the morning. If you like photography, quiet streets, wooden houses and dramatic valley scenery, Lauterbrunnen is hard to beat.

Grindelwald is more open and mountain-focused. The views feel bigger, especially because of the Eiger and the access to First, Bachalpsee and other high routes. It is also more activity-driven and can feel busier or more developed.

My simple recommendation:

  • Choose Lauterbrunnen for atmosphere, waterfalls and photography.
  • Choose Grindelwald for big mountain views, First, Bachalpsee and hiking access.
  • Choose Interlaken as a base if you want to visit both easily.

Should you stay in Grindelwald or Interlaken?

This depends on the kind of trip you want.

Stay in Grindelwald if you want to wake up surrounded by mountains and focus mainly on hiking, cable cars and alpine scenery. It is a more immersive mountain base than Interlaken.

Stay in Interlaken if you want flexibility. Interlaken is better connected for day trips to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Mürren, Wengen, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and other parts of the region.

Personally, I often prefer Interlaken or Thun as a base because I like the flexibility of public transport. But if your dream is to wake up with the Eiger nearby and spend several days hiking, Grindelwald makes a lot of sense.

Can you visit Grindelwald as a day trip from Interlaken?

Yes, Grindelwald is an easy day trip from Interlaken.

This is one of the best reasons to visit. You can leave Interlaken in the morning, arrive in Grindelwald by train, spend the day around First or Bachalpsee, and return in the evening.

A simple one-day itinerary could look like this:

  1. Morning train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald.
  2. Walk through Grindelwald village.
  3. Take the cable car to Grindelwald First.
  4. Do the Bachalpsee hike if the weather is good.
  5. Return to First and descend to Grindelwald.
  6. Have a short walk or meal in the village.
  7. Train back to Interlaken.

This is a full but realistic day without a car.

Best time to visit Grindelwald

The best time to visit Grindelwald depends on what you want to do.

For hiking, late spring, summer and early autumn are usually the most useful seasons. Trails like Bachalpsee and the Eiger Trail depend on snow conditions, so always check before planning your route.

Summer gives you long days and the best hiking access, but also the biggest crowds. If you want quieter conditions, try going early in the morning or outside peak holiday periods.

Spring can be beautiful, but higher trails may still be closed or partly covered in snow. Autumn can be excellent for hiking if conditions are stable, with cooler air and fewer crowds than midsummer.

Winter is a different kind of trip. Grindelwald becomes more focused on skiing, winter sports and snowy mountain scenery.

How much time do you need in Grindelwald?

For a first visit, one full day is enough to see the village, go up to Grindelwald First and do the Bachalpsee hike if conditions allow.

If you want to do both Bachalpsee and the Eiger Trail, you probably need more time. Those are better treated as separate hiking days unless you are very fit, experienced and planning carefully.

A rough guide:

Time availableBest plan
2–3 hoursWalk around Grindelwald village
Half dayVillage + short mountain viewpoint
Full dayGrindelwald First + Bachalpsee
Two daysBachalpsee one day, Eiger Trail another day
Longer stayUse Grindelwald as a hiking base

Is Grindelwald too touristy?

Grindelwald is touristy, but that does not make it bad.

It is one of the major destinations in the Jungfrau Region, so you should expect crowds, hotels, restaurants, cable car queues and lots of visitors, especially on sunny summer days. It is not the place to go if you want to feel completely alone in the mountains.

But it is popular for a reason. The setting is spectacular and the infrastructure makes it easy to access mountain scenery without needing a car or advanced mountaineering experience.

The best way to enjoy Grindelwald is to accept what it is: a very scenic, very accessible mountain village. Go early if you want a quieter experience.

Practical tips for visiting Grindelwald

Use Interlaken Ost if you are coming from Interlaken. This is the main station for Grindelwald trains.

Check weather before paying for mountain transport. Grindelwald First and Bachalpsee are much better on clear days.

Start early in summer. This helps with crowds and gives you more flexibility.

Do not try to do everything in one day. Grindelwald First, Bachalpsee, the Eiger Trail and Jungfraujoch are not all one casual itinerary.

Bring layers. Weather can change quickly in the mountains.

Check current train and cable car times. Do not rely only on old blog posts or screenshots, including this one.

Wear proper shoes if hiking. Bachalpsee is accessible, but it is still a mountain trail.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is treating Grindelwald like a quick photo stop. You can see the village quickly, but the real value is in using it as access to the mountains.

Another mistake is arriving too late. If you want to do Grindelwald First and Bachalpsee, give yourself most of the day.

Do not assume that every trail is open just because it is sunny in Interlaken. Conditions can be different higher up.

Also, do not confuse Grindelwald station, Grindelwald Terminal and Grindelwald First. They are connected, but they are not the same thing. Check your route carefully depending on whether you are going into the village, up to First, or towards Jungfraujoch.

Suggested one-day Grindelwald itinerary from Interlaken

If I were planning a simple first-time day trip, I would do this:

Start early from Interlaken Ost and take the train to Grindelwald. Spend a little time walking through the village, then continue to the Grindelwald First cable car. Go up to First, enjoy the views, and if the weather is good, hike to Bachalpsee.

After the hike, return to First and descend back to Grindelwald. Before taking the train back to Interlaken, leave some time to walk through the village again. The light can be very beautiful later in the day, especially when the mountains begin to soften in the evening.

This gives you a clear, simple day without trying to squeeze in too much.

Final thoughts: Is Grindelwald worth it?

Grindelwald is worth visiting if you want dramatic mountain scenery and easy access to some of the best-known experiences in the Jungfrau Region.

It is not the quietest or most hidden place in Switzerland, and I would not describe it as untouched. But the setting is genuinely powerful. The Eiger dominates the landscape, the train from Interlaken is easy, and the combination of Grindelwald First, Bachalpsee and nearby hiking routes makes it one of the most useful places to understand if you are planning a trip around Interlaken.

If you are choosing between places, I would see Grindelwald as the mountain-activity choice. For atmosphere, I still prefer Lauterbrunnen. For flexibility, Interlaken is usually the better base. But for big alpine views and a classic first mountain day, Grindelwald is hard to ignore.
