In this guide
Oeschinensee and Blausee are two of the most popular lake trips near Kandersteg, and at first glance they can feel like similar choices. Both are blue, photogenic, easy to combine with public transport, and often mentioned by people planning a trip through the Bernese Oberland.
But they are not really the same kind of experience.
Oeschinensee is the bigger alpine lake day. It sits higher in the mountains, feels more dramatic, and works best if you want views, hiking and a proper half-day or full-day trip. Blausee, from what I have researched and planned, seems much smaller, easier, and more polished: more of a short scenic stop than a full mountain day.
I have visited Oeschinensee myself, but I have not been to Blausee yet. So this comparison is written from that perspective: my own experience at Oeschinensee, combined with practical travel planning for Blausee, including route, time, cost, hiking, photography and whether either lake makes sense as a day trip from Interlaken.
If you are trying to choose between Oeschinensee and Blausee, the short answer is simple: choose Oeschinensee for the bigger alpine experience, and choose Blausee if you want something easier, shorter and lower-effort.
Quick answer: Oeschinensee or Blausee?
Choose Oeschinensee if you want the more impressive alpine lake, bigger mountain views, hiking options and a proper day trip from Interlaken. Choose Blausee if you want a shorter, easier and more compact visit near Kandersteg.
For most first-time visitors, I would choose Oeschinensee. It feels more like a real mountain destination, especially if you want hiking, wide views and that classic Swiss alpine lake feeling.
Blausee makes more sense if you have less time, want a softer visit, or are looking for a pretty stop that does not require as much walking or planning.

The main difference between Oeschinensee and Blausee
The main difference is scale.
Oeschinensee feels like a full alpine destination. You travel to Kandersteg, go up towards the lake, walk through the mountain landscape and arrive at a large blue lake surrounded by cliffs and peaks. It feels open, dramatic and properly alpine.
Blausee is much smaller. It is known for its intense blue water, forest setting and easy access. It seems more like a short scenic stop: beautiful, simple and compact, but not the same kind of mountain day as Oeschinensee.
So the choice is not really “which lake is prettier?” It is more about what kind of experience you want.
If you want a bigger day, choose Oeschinensee.
If you want something short and easy, choose Blausee.
What Oeschinensee is like
Oeschinensee is one of the most impressive lakes I have visited in Switzerland. It has the kind of setting that feels bigger in person than it looks in photos: blue water, steep mountain walls, open alpine scenery and a real sense of space.
The lake sits above Kandersteg, so reaching it takes more effort than simply stepping off a train. You usually travel to Kandersteg, continue towards the cable car, go up the mountain and then walk to the lake.
That extra effort is part of why it feels more rewarding.
When I visited, what stood out most was not just the colour of the water, but the scale of the place. Oeschinensee does not feel like a small lake you quickly look at and leave. It feels like somewhere you can spend hours walking, taking photos, sitting by the water or continuing on nearby trails.
If you are building a Switzerland itinerary around mountain scenery, Oeschinensee is the stronger choice.

What Blausee seems like from a travel planning perspective
Blausee is still on my list, so I do not want to pretend I have experienced it in the same way as Oeschinensee.
From a planning perspective, Blausee seems like a very different kind of visit. It is smaller, easier to reach, more contained and more polished. Instead of a wide alpine hiking day, it looks like a compact nature park experience built around a very clear blue lake.
That can be a good thing.
Not every travel day needs to be a big hiking day. Sometimes you want a shorter stop, especially if the weather is mixed, your legs are tired, or you are already passing through Kandersteg.
Blausee seems best for people who want:
- an easy scenic stop
- a short visit rather than a full day
- a pretty forest-and-lake setting
- less walking than Oeschinensee
- a place that is easier to combine with other plans
But if you are only choosing one lake and you want the strongest alpine experience, I would still lean towards Oeschinensee.

Which lake has better views?
Oeschinensee has the better views if you want big mountain scenery.
The landscape is more dramatic, more open and more alpine. The lake is surrounded by steep cliffs and high peaks, which gives it that classic Swiss mountain feeling. It feels like a destination you travel to for the full setting, not just the water.
Blausee seems more intimate. The appeal is not huge alpine scale, but detail: blue water, trees, reflections and a smaller enclosed setting. It may be better for calm, polished, close-up scenes, but not for the kind of wide mountain views you get at Oeschinensee.
For big views, Oeschinensee wins.
For a smaller, quieter-looking scene, Blausee may fit better.
Which lake is easier to reach?
Blausee is probably easier to visit in a low-effort way.
Oeschinensee requires more steps. You need to get to Kandersteg, continue to the cable car area, go up, and then walk to the lake. It is not difficult, but it is more of a journey.
Blausee is more compact and seems easier to fit into a shorter schedule. If you are already near Kandersteg or travelling through the area, it can work well as a shorter stop.
That said, Oeschinensee is still very manageable by public transport. It is not hard to reach; it just takes more time and planning than Blausee.
If you want the easiest visit, choose Blausee.
If you do not mind a little more effort for a much bigger reward, choose Oeschinensee.
Which one is better from Interlaken?
From Interlaken, I would choose Oeschinensee for most first-time visitors.
The reason is simple: if you are already spending the time and money to travel from Interlaken towards Kandersteg, Oeschinensee gives you the more complete mountain experience. It feels more worth building a day around.
Blausee can also be visited from Interlaken, but I would see it more as a shorter stop or add-on, not necessarily the main reason to make the journey unless you specifically want to see it.
A good rule:
- If you have a full day from Interlaken, choose Oeschinensee.
- If you have limited time or want something easier, choose Blausee.
- If you are already in Kandersteg, you could consider both depending on your schedule.

Which one is better for hiking?
Oeschinensee is clearly better for hiking.
There are more walking and hiking options around the lake, and the whole setting feels more suited to spending several hours outdoors. Even the standard route to the lake gives you more of a mountain-day feeling than a quick scenic stop.
Blausee seems much more limited as a hiking destination. You can walk around and enjoy the setting, but it is not the same kind of hiking base.
Choose Oeschinensee if hiking is part of your plan.
Choose Blausee if you want something easier and more relaxed.
Which one is better for photography?
This depends on your style of photography.
Oeschinensee is better for wide landscapes, mountain scenes, dramatic views and big alpine compositions. If you like photographing scale, light, cliffs, trails and people moving through a mountain landscape, Oeschinensee gives you more to work with.
Blausee seems better for smaller, more controlled scenes: blue water, reflections, forest details and calm compositions. It may be easier to photograph quickly, but it probably has less variety than Oeschinensee.
For travel and landscape photography, I would choose Oeschinensee.
For a short, pretty photo stop, Blausee could still be very appealing.
Which one is cheaper?
This depends on the season, ticket type, transport choices and whether you use a travel pass, so always check current prices before visiting.
In general, Oeschinensee can become more expensive if you use the cable car, eat at the lake, or combine it with other paid transport. Blausee may also involve an entrance fee, so it is not necessarily free or automatically cheap.
The better question is value.
Oeschinensee is likely better value if you want a full mountain experience and will spend several hours there.
Blausee may be better value if you only want a short scenic stop and do not want to commit to a longer mountain day.
Which one is less crowded?
Both can be busy.
Oeschinensee is very popular, especially in good weather, summer, weekends and holiday periods. Because it is a major alpine lake destination, you should not expect to have it to yourself.
Blausee is also well known and can be busy despite being smaller. In some ways, a smaller place can feel crowded more quickly because there is less space for people to spread out.
If you want a quieter experience, go early, avoid peak weekends where possible, and be realistic. These are not hidden places.
Can you visit Oeschinensee and Blausee in one day?
Yes, it should be possible to visit both Oeschinensee and Blausee in one day if you plan carefully and start early.
But I would not recommend rushing both if this is your first visit and you want to properly enjoy Oeschinensee. Oeschinensee works best when you give it time. The whole point is not just to arrive, take a photo and leave, but to walk, look around and let the place feel big.
A combined day makes more sense if:
- you start early
- you are staying near Interlaken, Spiez or Kandersteg
- you already know your route
- the weather is stable
- you want to see both rather than fully experience one
For most people, I would choose one. If it is your first time, choose Oeschinensee.
My honest recommendation
My honest recommendation is Oeschinensee for most first-time visitors.
It is the bigger, more memorable and more complete alpine experience. It gives you mountains, hiking, wide views and that feeling of being properly away from the town. If you are travelling from Interlaken and only want to choose one lake, Oeschinensee is the one I would prioritise.
Blausee still looks worth visiting, and I do want to go. But based on how it fits into a trip, I would treat it as a shorter scenic stop rather than a main mountain day.
So my simple advice is:
- Choose Oeschinensee if this is your first visit.
- Choose Blausee if you want something easier.
- Visit both only if you have enough time and do not mind a fuller travel day.
Final thoughts
Oeschinensee and Blausee are close enough that people often compare them, but they serve different purposes.
Oeschinensee is the lake I would plan a day around. It is bigger, more dramatic and more rewarding if you want the classic Bernese Oberland mountain experience.
Blausee seems more like a beautiful short stop: easier, smaller and more polished. That does not make it worse, but it does make it different.
If your Switzerland trip has limited time and you want the stronger memory, choose Oeschinensee. If you want a calm, simple lake visit without a full alpine day, Blausee may be the better fit.
For my own travel style, Oeschinensee is still the one I would choose first.
