Choosing where to stay in the Jungfrau Region can be confusing, because Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald all make sense for different reasons.

Interlaken is the most practical base. Lauterbrunnen feels more scenic and atmospheric. Grindelwald gives you stronger mountain views and easier access to hikes around First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger area.

So the best place to stay depends less on which town is “best” and more on what kind of trip you want.

If you are travelling without a car, planning several day trips and want the easiest logistics, Interlaken is usually the safest choice. If you want to wake up in a dramatic valley surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen feels more special. If your trip is focused on mountain views, hiking and outdoor activities, Grindelwald may suit you better.

Quick answer: where should you stay?

For most first-time visitors without a car, Interlaken is the easiest base. It has the best train connections, more accommodation options and works well for day trips to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Mürren, Wengen, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and Oeschinensee.

Choose Lauterbrunnen if you care more about atmosphere than convenience. It feels more dramatic than Interlaken, but it is smaller and less flexible as a base.

Choose Grindelwald if your trip is focused on mountain views, Bachalpsee, First, the Eiger Trail or staying closer to the mountains.

A simple way to decide:

BaseBest forMain downside
InterlakenConvenience, trains, day trips, first-time visitorsLess dramatic scenery
LauterbrunnenValley atmosphere, waterfalls, Mürren and WengenSmaller, fewer options
GrindelwaldMountain views, First, Bachalpsee, Eiger hikesLess central for some day trips

Interlaken vs Lauterbrunnen vs Grindelwald at a glance

Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are close enough that you can visit all three during one trip. But staying in each place feels different.

Interlaken is the practical base. It sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and has strong train connections into the Jungfrau Region. It is useful rather than dramatic.

Lauterbrunnen is the scenic valley base. It has waterfalls, cliffs and a much stronger alpine feeling. It is one of the most beautiful places to stay, but it is smaller and less flexible than Interlaken.

Grindelwald is the mountain resort base. It has bigger mountain views, access to First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger area, and a more outdoorsy feel.

In short:

Choose this baseIf you want
InterlakenEasy transport, flexibility and day trips
LauterbrunnenAtmosphere, waterfalls and valley scenery
GrindelwaldMountain views, hikes and activities

If this is your first trip and you want the easiest base, choose Interlaken. If you want the most beautiful village atmosphere, choose Lauterbrunnen. If you want to wake up closer to the mountains, choose Grindelwald.

Stay in Interlaken if you want convenience

Interlaken is the best base if your main priority is convenience.

It is not the most dramatic place in the region, but it makes everything easier. You have more accommodation options, more restaurants, better transport connections and more flexibility if the weather changes.

This matters more than people realise. In the Swiss Alps, weather can change your plans quickly. If one valley is cloudy, another lake or town may still be worth visiting. Interlaken gives you more options without needing to move hotels.

Interlaken works especially well if you want to visit several places from one base, such as:

  • Lauterbrunnen
  • Grindelwald
  • Mürren
  • Wengen
  • Lake Thun
  • Lake Brienz
  • Oeschinensee
  • Kandersteg
  • Bern
  • Lucerne, if you do not mind a longer train day

If you stay in Interlaken, I would pay close attention to the station. For most Jungfrau Region trips, staying near Interlaken Ost is more practical. That is the station you will use for Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald.

Planning transport costs: Your choice of base also affects which transport pass makes the most sense. See my Swiss Travel Pass vs Berner Oberland Pass guide if most of your trip is around Interlaken and the Jungfrau region.

Interlaken West can still be a good choice if you prefer being closer to the town centre, restaurants and the Lake Thun side. I explain this more fully in my guide to Interlaken West vs Interlaken Ost.

Stay in Interlaken if:

  • you are travelling without a car
  • this is your first time in the region
  • you want to do several day trips
  • you want more hotel and food options
  • you do not want to change bases
  • you care more about logistics than waking up in the most scenic village

The downside is that Interlaken itself does not feel as magical as Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. It is surrounded by beautiful places, but the town is more of a gateway than the main event.

For a broader overview, see my Interlaken Travel Guide and Zurich to Interlaken Train Guide.

Stay in Lauterbrunnen if you want atmosphere

Lauterbrunnen is the better choice if you want your base to feel scenic the moment you arrive.

The village sits in a narrow valley with cliffs, waterfalls and mountain views around you. It feels much more alpine than Interlaken. If you have seen photos of the Jungfrau Region and imagined staying somewhere dramatic, Lauterbrunnen is probably closer to that idea.

It is also a very useful base for visiting:

  • Mürren
  • Wengen
  • Kleine Scheidegg
  • Trümmelbach Falls
  • Staubbach Falls
  • the Lauterbrunnen valley
  • scenic valley walks

I especially like Lauterbrunnen as a base if your trip is focused on the valley, Mürren or Wengen. The whole area feels more immersive than staying in Interlaken and taking the train in for the day.

That said, Lauterbrunnen is smaller. There are fewer restaurants, fewer hotels and less variety. If you like having lots of options in the evening, Interlaken is easier. If you are staying several nights and want to visit places in different directions, Lauterbrunnen can feel a bit less flexible.

Stay in Lauterbrunnen if:

  • you want the most atmospheric base
  • you care about views more than convenience
  • you want easy access to Mürren and Wengen
  • you like smaller villages
  • you are happy with fewer restaurant and hotel options

Do not choose Lauterbrunnen just because it looks better in photos. It is beautiful, but it is not automatically the best base for every trip. If you want to compare it properly, read my full guide to Interlaken vs Lauterbrunnen.

For transport, see Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen Train and Interlaken to Mürren. If you want a scenic walk in the area, my Mürren to Lauterbrunnen Hike guide may also help.

Stay in Grindelwald if you want mountain views and activities

Grindelwald is the best choice if you want to stay closer to mountain scenery and outdoor activities.

Compared with Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald feels more open and more like a mountain resort. You get big views towards the Eiger area, easy access to First, and a lot of hiking and activity options nearby.

It is especially useful for:

  • Grindelwald First
  • Bachalpsee
  • First Cliff Walk
  • Eiger Trail
  • Kleine Scheidegg
  • Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald Terminal
  • mountain activities around First

If your main reason for visiting the region is hiking, photography or mountain views, Grindelwald can be a better fit than Interlaken. You are already closer to several major routes, and the surroundings feel more dramatic.

The downside is that Grindelwald is less central than Interlaken for some day trips. It is excellent for the Grindelwald side of the region, but less convenient if you want to move between multiple valleys, lakes and towns.

It can also be more weather-dependent. If the mountains are covered in cloud, some of the main reasons to stay in Grindelwald become less visible.

Stay in Grindelwald if:

  • you want mountain views from your base
  • you plan to visit First or Bachalpsee
  • you want to hike around the Eiger area
  • you prefer a mountain resort feeling
  • you do not mind being slightly less central

For more detail, see my Grindelwald Travel Guide, Interlaken to Grindelwald Train, Bachalpsee Hike from Grindelwald First and Eiger Trail to Grindelwald.

Which is best without a car?

Interlaken is the easiest base without a car.

Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are also easy to reach by train, so you do not need a car for any of these places. But Interlaken gives you the most flexibility because it connects well in several directions.

From Interlaken, you can easily travel to:

  • Lauterbrunnen
  • Grindelwald
  • Mürren
  • Wengen
  • Lake Thun
  • Lake Brienz
  • Kandersteg
  • Oeschinensee

If you stay in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, you can still do a lot without a car. But you are more committed to one side of the region. That can be great if you know what you want, but less ideal if your plans are flexible.

For most no-car travellers, I would choose Interlaken for a first visit, especially near Interlaken Ost.

Useful guides:

Which is best for first-time visitors?

For most first-time visitors, Interlaken is the easiest choice.

That does not mean it is the most beautiful. It means it is the easiest place to plan from. You can arrive by train, choose from more hotels, reach the main valleys easily and change your plans if the weather is bad.

Choose Interlaken if you are nervous about logistics or want to see several places in one trip.

Choose Lauterbrunnen if you want the most memorable setting and do not mind staying somewhere smaller.

Choose Grindelwald if your trip is mainly about mountains, hikes and activities.

My honest take:

  • first-time visitor who wants easy planning: Interlaken
  • first-time visitor who wants scenery above everything: Lauterbrunnen
  • first-time visitor who wants mountain activities: Grindelwald

For first-time planning, my guides to Best Hikes Near Interlaken and Oeschinensee Day Trip from Interlaken may help you understand how the region fits together.

Which is best for hiking?

Grindelwald is usually the strongest base for hiking if you want mountain routes close to your accommodation.

It is the better choice for First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger area. If those are high on your list, Grindelwald makes a lot of sense.

Lauterbrunnen is better for valley walks and access to Mürren and Wengen. It is a beautiful base for scenic walking, especially if you want a less resort-like feeling.

Interlaken is best if you want variety. You can use it as a base for hikes in several directions, even if you are not staying directly in the mountains.

A simple hiking breakdown:

BaseHiking strength
InterlakenBest for variety and day-trip flexibility
LauterbrunnenBest for valley walks, Mürren and Wengen
GrindelwaldBest for First, Bachalpsee and Eiger-area hikes

Relevant guides:

Which is best for short stays?

For one or two nights, Interlaken is usually easiest.

Short stays are mostly about reducing friction. You do not want to spend too much time checking transfers, moving luggage or worrying about whether you picked the wrong side of the region.

For a short trip, Interlaken gives you the most flexibility.

For two or three nights, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald can work well if you already know your focus. If you want waterfalls, Mürren and valley scenery, choose Lauterbrunnen. If you want First, Bachalpsee and mountain views, choose Grindelwald.

For four or more nights, you have more freedom. You can either stay in Interlaken for convenience or split your stay between Interlaken and one of the mountain bases.

Trip lengthBest base
1 nightInterlaken
2 nightsInterlaken or Lauterbrunnen
3 nightsInterlaken, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald depending on focus
4+ nightsInterlaken or split between bases

If you hate changing hotels, stay in Interlaken. If you enjoy slow travel and want more atmosphere, consider Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.

Which is best for views?

Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald both beat Interlaken for immediate scenery.

Lauterbrunnen is best for valley views. The cliffs and waterfalls make it feel dramatic as soon as you arrive.

Grindelwald is best for mountain views. It feels wider, more open and more connected to the surrounding peaks.

Interlaken has a beautiful setting between two lakes, but as a town it feels less dramatic than the mountain villages. Its strength is not that it is the prettiest base, but that it is the most useful one.

Choose based on the view you want:

View typeBest base
Valley, cliffs and waterfallsLauterbrunnen
Mountains and alpine resort feelingGrindelwald
Lakes and easy transportInterlaken

Which is best for day trips?

Interlaken is the best base for day trips.

This is where Interlaken really wins. From one base, you can go in several directions without overcomplicating your trip.

Good day trips from Interlaken include:

  • Lauterbrunnen
  • Grindelwald
  • Mürren
  • Wengen
  • Oeschinensee
  • Lake Thun
  • Lake Brienz
  • Kandersteg
  • Bern
  • Lucerne

Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald are better if your day trips are focused on their side of the region. But if you want to keep your options open, Interlaken is easier.

Useful guides:

Where to stay near the train stations

If you are travelling without a car, the train station matters.

You do not need to obsess over it, but staying near the right station can make your trip smoother, especially if you are carrying luggage or taking early trains.

Near Interlaken Ost

Stay near Interlaken Ost if your main focus is the Jungfrau Region.

This is the most practical area for trains to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. It is also convenient if you want to avoid unnecessary transfers.

Best for:

  • first-time visitors
  • no-car travellers
  • day trips to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald
  • easy train logistics

Read more: Interlaken West vs Interlaken Ost

Near Interlaken West

Stay near Interlaken West if you prefer being closer to the town centre, restaurants and the Lake Thun side.

It can feel more convenient in the evening, depending on where you eat and walk around. But for Jungfrau Region trains, Interlaken Ost is usually more useful.

Best for:

  • town centre access
  • restaurants
  • Lake Thun side
  • a slightly more central Interlaken feel

Near Lauterbrunnen station

In Lauterbrunnen, staying near the station is very practical.

It makes arrival and departure easier, and it also helps if you plan to visit Mürren or Wengen. The village is not huge, but station access still matters if you have luggage.

Best for:

  • easy arrival by train
  • Mürren and Wengen access
  • short stays
  • no-car travellers

Near Grindelwald station

Staying near Grindelwald station is convenient if you want village access and easy transport.

It is a good all-round choice if you want to explore Grindelwald itself, take trains onward or avoid being too far from the centre.

Best for:

  • village access
  • restaurants
  • train connections
  • first-time visitors to Grindelwald

Near Grindelwald Terminal

Grindelwald Terminal is useful for the Eiger Express and Jungfraujoch routes, but it feels less charming than staying in the village centre.

It can make sense for very specific plans, but for atmosphere I would usually prefer staying closer to the village.

For more transport detail, see Interlaken to Grindelwald Train.

My honest recommendation

For most first-time visitors without a car, I would choose Interlaken, especially near Interlaken Ost.

It may not be the most beautiful base, but it makes the whole region easier. You can reach Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Mürren, Wengen and other day trips without overthinking the logistics.

If you care more about waking up somewhere scenic, choose Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.

Lauterbrunnen feels more atmospheric and dramatic. Grindelwald gives you stronger mountain views and better access to First, Bachalpsee and the Eiger area.

If I had to simplify it:

  • choose Interlaken for convenience
  • choose Lauterbrunnen for atmosphere
  • choose Grindelwald for mountain views

There is no wrong choice here. The main thing is to choose the base that matches your trip, not just the one that looks best in photos.
